Long Beach Street Tree Rules

A tree in your parkway belongs to the City of Long Beach, so trimming it takes a Public Works permit and removing it starts with an arborist inspection request.

Trimming

A Public Works permit comes first for trimming a tree in the public right of way. City crews inspect and rank requests by severity, keeping pedestrian and vehicle paths clear first. You can send requests by email to PWStreets@longbeach.gov, call (562) 570-2700 and choose option 4, or use GO Long Beach.

Removing

Removal starts with an Arborist Inspection Request form to Public Works. Do not count on leaf drop or roots as your reason until you have read the Citywide Tree Maintenance Policy from July 2023. Ask before anyone cuts, because this is a public tree.

Planting

You need a Permit to Plant Public Tree, and you must choose from the Approved Tree List. The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability also runs a free street tree program for empty parkway spots. The city inventory logged more than 50,000 empty sites, and each neighborhood page shows the count for that area.

Your Yard Trees

Trees wholly on your own lot are yours to care for. CSLB lists tree removal, stump removal and pruning higher than 15 feet among licensed work, so ask about the license and insurance. See our tree work.

Questions We Hear

Who pays when a street tree lifts my sidewalk?

Report it to Public Works first so the city can inspect it. Do not cut roots on a public tree on your own.
